The datacenter is going through a transformation, and the enabler is virtualization.

The Datacenter 3.0 infrastructure, through virtualization, allows IT organizations to address a vast array of challenges, but what were Datacenter 1.0 and 2.0?

Datacenter 1.0 was the “glass house” environment where traditional mainframes lived. Control and processing was centralized, and users accessed applications through “dumb terminals”.
Datacenter 2.0 evolved with the advent of the PC, client/server, and web based computing models. User driven applications prevailed, and while the mainframe environment remained in place, users and departments took control of applications to more quickly address business needs.

Datacenter 3.0 provides an opportunity to leverage what we learned from its predecessors and to efficiently address the demands of today at tremendously lower cost.
